Zillow Group announced on Tuesday that it has let go of more than 500 employees, representing roughly 7 percent of its total workforce. The move comes just one day before the company is set to release its second-quarter earnings report, adding pressure to an already closely watched financial update.
This marks the second wave of layoffs for the real estate marketplace in 2025. Earlier in the year, the company had already reduced staff in select departments, though it did not disclose exact numbers at that time. The latest cuts appear to be the largest single reduction Zillow has made in a single day this year.
In a memo sent to staff, company leadership framed the decision as a necessary step to streamline operations and refocus resources on core business priorities. The affected roles span multiple teams, including engineering, product, and sales, according to sources familiar with the situation who asked not to be named because the details are private.
Zillow has faced a challenging housing market over the past year, with high mortgage rates and low inventory slowing transaction volumes. The company has been working to pivot toward technology-driven services like its digital mortgage platform and enhanced listing tools, but those efforts have not yet offset the broader slowdown in home buying activity.
The layoffs come at a delicate time. Investors will be looking closely at Thursday's earnings call for signs of how the company plans to manage costs going forward and whether further reductions are on the horizon. Zillow's stock has been volatile in recent months, and the announcement did little to settle market nerves in after-hours trading.
Employees who were let go will receive severance packages, including extended health coverage and career transition support, according to the memo. The company did not provide a specific breakdown of which offices or regions were most affected.
Zillow is not alone in trimming its workforce. Several other real estate tech firms have announced similar cutbacks this year as the industry adjusts to a slower market. Still, the scale of this reduction signals that Zillow sees the current conditions as more than a short-term dip.
