Warning Signs an Agent Might Leave Your Brokerage and How to Respond

Warning Signs an Agent Might Leave Your Brokerage and How to Respond

Roughly $14.4 billion in annualized production changed firms during the third quarter, with agent moves typically peaking in January. That figure underscores how much production is at stake when top performers decide to walk, and it explains why brokerage leaders should treat retention as a year round priority rather than a scramble that begins when a resignation letter lands.

Departures rarely happen without signals. A productive agent who suddenly stops engaging in office meetings, declines invitations to team events, or shows little interest in new marketing initiatives may be pulling away. Watch for changes in routine as well. Someone who once asked for staff support on listings and transactions but now handles everything quietly could be preparing to operate independently. Requests for copies of client records, commission statements, or contract templates deserve attention too, especially when they arrive without a clear explanation.

Compensation questions are another common indicator. An agent who begins comparing splits, desk fees, or marketing support to what competitors offer is often testing the waters. So is an agent who becomes unusually focused on the fine print of an independent contractor agreement.

The response matters more than the warning itself. Schedule regular one on one conversations so concerns surface early. Ask about goals, frustrations, and the support agents actually need. Address service gaps before they become reasons to leave, and make retention offers specific rather than generic. When a top producer feels heard and sees a clear path forward, the odds of keeping that production in house improve considerably.
