Socialist Candidates Are on the Rise—With a New, Pro-Building Platform for the Housing Crisis

Across the country, Democratic Socialist candidates are appearing on more ballots than ever before. But their platform this year looks different from what many voters might expect. Instead of focusing only on rent control and tenant protections, a growing number of these candidates are pushing a pro-building agenda to tackle the housing crisis.

The shift is notable. For years, progressive housing policy centered on slowing evictions and capping rent increases. While those ideas remain popular, a new wave of socialist and democratic socialist contenders argues that the real problem is a simple lack of homes. They are calling for more public housing, yes, but also for streamlined permitting, denser zoning near transit, and even relaxed rules that block small apartment buildings in single-family neighborhoods.

Supporters say this approach bridges a long-standing divide. On one side, market advocates want to remove barriers to private construction. On the other, housing justice groups want stronger public oversight. The new socialist platform tries to do both: use government muscle to build at scale, while also forcing private developers to include affordable units in any large project.

Critics are skeptical. Some on the left worry that pro-building language plays into developer interests. Some on the right dismiss it as more government spending. But candidates running on this message say they are responding to what renters and young homeowners actually need: more supply, faster.

With housing costs still climbing in most major cities, this new platform could give Democratic Socialists a broader appeal. Whether it wins over enough voters in November remains to be seen, but the conversation has clearly changed.
