Reclusive Billionaire Craigslist Founder Reveals Why He Quit San Francisco for New York

The famously private billionaire behind Craigslist has finally explained why he traded the Bay Area for the Big Apple. In a rare and candid conversation with a San Francisco outlet, the 73-year-old internet pioneer revealed that his move to New York five years ago was less about escaping California and more about finding a place that felt like home again.

He admitted that San Francisco, the city where he built one of the most influential classifieds platforms in history, had changed in ways that no longer suited him. While he stopped short of blaming any single factor, he pointed to a growing sense of alienation. The tech boom that made his fortune also transformed the city's character, pushing out the creative, gritty energy he once loved. He described the current atmosphere as one of constant disruption, where the relentless focus on startups and venture capital overshadowed the everyday lives of regular people.

New York, he said, offers a different kind of rhythm. It is a place where he can walk the streets without being constantly pitched or measured by his net worth. He appreciates the density, the anonymity, and the sheer variety of human interaction. He also noted that the city's infrastructure, while imperfect, feels more honest than the polished, car-centric sprawl of the Peninsula. For him, the move was a return to a more grounded existence, a way to be a regular person again, even if he remains one of the wealthiest men in the world. He has no plans to return to California.
