Plans for the second phase of the massive DataBank data center project in Orangeburg have been significantly scaled back. Original proposals for the expansion have been curtailed, reflecting shifting economic conditions and power capacity challenges facing the data storage industry. The adjustment marks a notable shift for a project once seen as a major driver of local tax revenue and construction activity.
In neighboring Suffern, a new residential proposal is taking shape. A developer has put forward plans to construct a five-story, multi-family building on the site of the former Avon Enamel building. This project, however, is entirely contingent on the Village of Suffern approving a text amendment to its Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) zone. The proposed change would allow for increased density and building height, aiming to capitalize on the property's proximity to the Suffern train station.
Meanwhile, in the Village of Airmont, a change of use is on the horizon. The building that long housed the Airmont Fitness Center is slated to become a yeshiva. The property was recently sold, and the new ownership has submitted plans to convert the existing structure into an educational facility, continuing a trend of institutional growth within the area. These three developments highlight the ongoing evolution of Rockland County's commercial and residential landscape.
