A prominent online financial influencer has been handed a significant prison term for defrauding investors. Tyler Bossetti, 31, was sentenced on Friday to six years in federal prison for orchestrating a multimillion-dollar real estate Ponzi scheme.
Operating through social media platforms, Bossetti built a following by presenting himself as a successful real estate investment expert. He solicited funds from the public, promising high returns from short-term property flips and rental income. However, prosecutors detailed that his business was a sham. Instead of investing the capital, Bossetti used money from new investors to pay fabricated returns to earlier ones, a classic hallmark of a Ponzi scheme.
The court found that his fraudulent activities resulted in approximately $20 million in losses for numerous victims. The scheme unraveled when he could no longer sustain the fictitious payouts. In addition to his prison sentence, Bossetti was ordered to pay restitution to those he defrauded. The case has been highlighted by authorities as a stark warning about the risks of investment opportunities promoted by unverified online personalities, urging the public to exercise extreme diligence.
