I'm building my mom a home in my yard instead of sending her to assisted living

I'm building my mom a home in my yard instead of sending her to assisted living

Shalini Karnani Bonjour always knew the day would come when she would need to care for her aging mother. The decision to move her mom from Michigan to California was difficult, but the real challenge began when she decided to build an accessory dwelling unit, or ADU, in her own backyard. Instead of placing her mother in an assisted living facility, Bonjour wanted to keep her close. What she did not expect was how complicated and exhausting the process would become.

From navigating local zoning laws to securing permits and dealing with contractors, the project stretched far beyond a simple construction job. Bonjour spent months researching regulations, fighting with city officials, and managing unexpected costs. She wanted to create a safe, comfortable space where her mother could maintain independence while still being part of the family. The idea was beautiful, but the reality was a maze of red tape and delays.

Despite the obstacles, Bonjour pushed forward. She learned about foundation requirements, insulation standards, and plumbing codes. She lost sleep over budgets and timelines. Her mother, meanwhile, waited patiently in Michigan, trusting that her daughter would find a way. The emotional weight of the project was heavy, but the goal was clear: keep family together.

In the end, the ADU was finished. Her mother now lives just steps away from the main house, with her own kitchen, bedroom, and living area. Bonjour says the struggle was worth it. She gets to see her mother every day, share meals, and know she is safe. The experience taught her that building a home for a loved one is about more than wood and nails. It is about love, patience, and the determination to keep family close.
