I built a tiny home by myself for under $50,000. It's helping me save money.

Fairchild had been renting a one-bedroom apartment for $1,400 a month. She watched her savings stay flat no matter how hard she worked. So she moved back in with her mom temporarily and started researching construction. She had no prior building experience, just a stubborn streak and a tight budget.

The house is 220 square feet with a lofted sleeping area, a small kitchen, and a composting toilet. She did everything from framing to roofing to electrical work, with occasional help from her father and a few friends who knew more about plumbing than she did. The hardest part was the insulation and drywall, she says, because it was heavy and awkward to handle alone.

She kept costs down by buying used windows and reclaimed wood for the siding. She also waited for seasonal sales on lumber and did all the painting herself. The final price tag came to around $48,000, including the trailer base and all tools she had to purchase along the way.

Now her monthly expenses are just property taxes, utilities, and a small loan payment for the materials. She pays about $300 a month total, which lets her put nearly a thousand dollars into savings every month. She also has no mortgage and no rent.

Fairchild admits the process was exhausting and lonely at times. There were weekends when she wanted to quit, especially during the hot summer months. But she says the payoff is worth it. She now has a paid-off home, a growing emergency fund, and a skill set she never thought she would have.

She plans to stay in the tiny house for at least five more years, then maybe rent it out or sell it. For now, she is just enjoying the quiet and the freedom of living without a big monthly bill.
