Former Masco headquarters slated for redevelopment

Former Masco headquarters slated for redevelopment

A sprawling office complex in Taylor that once served as the global headquarters for Masco Corporation is finally poised for a new chapter. The building has sat largely vacant for the past six years, following a series of corporate relocations that drained the life from the massive structure. Now, local officials and developers are moving forward with plans to transform the site into a mixed-use hub.

The property, which covers a significant footprint in the city, has been a quiet landmark since Masco shifted its operations. The company, known for building products and home improvement brands, left the building in search of a more modern and efficient workspace. That departure left a cavernous, outdated office tower that struggled to attract new tenants in a post-pandemic market where demand for traditional office space has plummeted.

Redevelopment plans aim to breathe new life into the complex by converting portions of the building into residential units, retail space, and possibly light industrial use. City leaders see the project as a way to boost the local tax base and bring foot traffic back to a part of Taylor that has seen little activity in recent years. The new design is expected to prioritize walkability and community gathering areas, a stark contrast to the isolated corporate campus feel of the original structure.

Demolition of some sections may be required to make way for the new layout, though developers hope to preserve the main structural frame to cut down on construction waste and costs. The timeline for the project remains fluid, but early estimates suggest groundbreaking could happen within the next 18 months. For a city eager to shed its image as a bedroom community, this redevelopment represents a chance to create a true destination.
