ATLANTA - Georgia prison officials have scheduled an execution for next month for a man convicted of murdering two real estate agents in the Atlanta suburbs more than twenty years ago. The Georgia Department of Corrections confirmed the date on Monday, setting the stage for the state's first execution in over a year.
The man, whose identity was not immediately released by officials in the initial announcement, was found guilty of the 2003 shootings of two agents who were showing homes in a quiet neighborhood. The victims, both women in their forties, were discovered inside a model home that had been staged for an open house. The case drew widespread attention at the time due to the brutal nature of the killings and the lengthy investigation that followed.
Authorities said the victims were shot at close range, and evidence at the scene pointed to a robbery gone wrong. The convicted man was arrested several months later after a tip from a former acquaintance. He has since exhausted his state and federal appeals, with courts repeatedly upholding the conviction and sentence.
The execution is set to take place at the state prison in Jackson, where lethal injection is the method used. The date falls roughly three weeks from now. The attorney general's office said it would not comment further on the case until the day of the scheduled execution. Family members of the victims have been notified, according to prison spokespeople.
