City of Andy and PowerSouth exchange real estate

City of Andy and PowerSouth exchange real estate

The Andalusia City Council moved through a busy agenda this week, approving a real estate exchange with PowerSouth, adopting a $29.5 million budget for the next fiscal year, and signing off on funding for schools, grid reliability, and golf course improvements.

The property swap with PowerSouth involves land on both sides, though officials did not disclose specific acreage or locations during the public meeting. Council members described the deal as mutually beneficial, allowing the utility to consolidate operations while the city gains parcels suited for future infrastructure or recreational use. No cash changed hands in the transaction.

The FY2027 budget holds the line on property taxes while boosting spending on public safety and street maintenance. A significant portion of the new spending targets the local school system, with the council voting to transfer additional funds for facility upgrades and technology updates. Power reliability also got a line item, with money earmarked for backup generators at critical city buildings and tree trimming along major feeder lines.

Golf course irrigation received a dedicated allocation as well. The municipal course has struggled with aging sprinkler heads and inconsistent water pressure, especially during dry summer months. The new funds will replace the main pump station and install moisture sensors on the greens, which should cut water usage by roughly a third.

The mayor thanked council members for their work on the budget, noting that the process included several public work sessions. The fiscal year begins October 1.
