California Dreamers Return: Why One Family's Texas Move Backfired

Guadalupe Galindo-Nevarez and her family thought they had found their answer in Texas. Like thousands of others, they packed up their California life and headed east, chasing lower home prices and a slower pace. But the reality of their new home did not match the promise.

The family quickly discovered that Texas came with its own steep costs. Property taxes were far higher than expected, eating into any savings they had gained from cheaper housing. The relentless summer heat made outdoor life nearly impossible, and the family struggled to adjust. "We thought we were getting a fresh start," Galindo-Nevarez said. "Instead, we got a different set of problems."

After two years of trying to make it work, the family decided to move back to California. They are not alone. A growing number of former Californians are reversing their moves, citing extreme weather, rising insurance rates, and unexpected expenses. The Texas dream of wide-open space and lower taxes often comes with hidden trade-offs.

Galindo-Nevarez now says the move was not worth it. She misses the mild climate, the familiar communities, and the job opportunities she left behind. For her family, the lesson was expensive but clear: sometimes the grass only looks greener on the other side. They are now planning their return, hoping to rebuild the life they once had.
