Anthropic's new downtown headquarters gives the AI pioneer a polished home in the heart of San Francisco. But the company is quietly eyeing a decades-old industrial building in a nearby neighborhood.
The artificial intelligence developer, known for its Claude chatbot and its focus on AI safety research, has set its sights on a property in the Mission District, according to people familiar with the matter. The building in question is a vintage industrial structure that predates the city's tech boom by decades, a stark contrast to the glass and steel towers that now define much of San Francisco's corporate landscape.
The move signals that Anthropic may be planning for significant growth beyond its current footprint. The company has expanded rapidly over the past two years, hiring researchers and engineers at a steady clip while competing with rivals such as OpenAI and Google for talent and computing resources.
Converting an older industrial property would likely require extensive renovation. Such buildings often need structural upgrades, new mechanical systems, and seismic retrofits before they can house modern office operations. Still, the location offers advantages. The Mission District sits close to public transit, restaurants, and a large pool of skilled workers who already live in the area.
Anthropic has not confirmed any purchase or lease agreement. Real estate sources caution that talks remain early and could fall through. If the deal moves forward, it would add another chapter to the company's growing presence in San Francisco, a city that has become a global center for artificial intelligence development despite recent struggles in its commercial property market.
